When the MMIX project was announced, many volunteers came from far and wide to help with the project. In fact, the whole MMIX project was done on a volunteer basis, with many people contributing both their time and expert knowledge in the creation of the first MMIX programs. The majority of the volunteers were involved directly in the programming stages of the project, but there were other areas where volunteers made a large contribution. With the programming work, large amounts of data needed to be converted to the MMIXAL language.
In addition to programming, other volunteers did quality checks to make sure the project was adhering to its own standards. Some volunteers also played an administration role, making sure that everything involved with the project was organized and coordinated well. A special website was created to document and list all of the tasks that needed to be completed and the status of the entire process.
